[Zoobank-list] petition for guaranteed public access
topublicly-funded research results

Hi Paddy
Certainly, I can bring such issues up. If EOL is not open access, then why
bother? To make this fly, it will need a huge human impact, since a lot of
the data you finally need can not entirely be generated by machine (unless
you accept large errors) and even need some experts input.
In a related matter: We are close now to have GoldenGate, our semiautomatic
mark up tool to produce valid taxonx document based on OCR-ed taxonomic
publications. Excuse my ignorance, but I would like to have the chance to
compare a couple of text files and run them through your findit tool, but I
would like that the names it finds are marked up not just indexed. Is there
a chance? We have for that FAT implemented, and it runs well, but there are
plenty of names in the pubs such as Generic names, single species epithet
and others which are difficult to find.

Donat
could you make sure this issue is raised at the workshop.
I am sure it will be. We have so far been assuming EoL
will be open access, and will point to information that is
either open access or requires some kind of registration
or fee for access. The sustainability model is
currently being developed at the Field Museum, and I hope
that it retains this style of thinking.
